What is a Postal Code?

A postal code is a set of numbers that helps determine which post office should handle a piece of mail. It’s like a code that tells the postal service where to send your letters and packages. By using postal codes, mail can be sorted and sent out more efficiently. It’s like putting things in the right boxes so they end up where they need to go, like your neighborhood or town.

In Kenya, postal codes are 5-digit, other countries use numbers, letters, and punctuations; however, in Kenya, it is only numerical (numbers 0-9).

What is the Difference Between Postal and Zip Codes?

Post codes were first used in 1932 in Ukraine as an indexing system for different places, while ZIP codes were first used in the USA in 1963 by USPS (United States Postal Services)

ZIP stands for; Zone Improvement Plan. There is no practical difference with postal codes, they both serve the same purposes. Only the United States and the Philippines use ZIP codes while the rest of the world uses postal codes and their variations.

Postcodes are used to identify general locations and thus have a wide range and coverage, meanwhile, ZIP codes identify the very exact location for mail and parcels to be delivered.

ZIP codes ensure speedy deliveries, while postcodes ensure delivery, eventually.

What Does G.P.O Mean?

G.P.O is an abbreviation for General Postal Office. It handles general mail and parcels that don’t have a delivery address. G.P.O in Nairobi is like the headquarters of all postal services, which is why it has the pilot number as its code 00100 while the next is 00200, and so on.

The Decline of Posta in Kenya

Postal services have been in decline not just in Kenya but worldwide, by an estimated 23% between 2015 and 2020.

But unlike the others, Posta has failed to evolve with the years as technology changes our ways, such as with the adoption of SMS and even more impactful, email for official communications.

Just like every Kenyan parastatal, the service here at Posta is not the best, just average at best, sometimes your packages or mail can arrive and no one will contact you, you just have to keep constantly checking yourself, so most people will opt for other services that are run efficiently and have better support such as DHL, Wells Fargo, G4S and others

The only thing Posta has a monopoly on currently is sending government documents such as certificates, letters, and most notably passports.
